AAA game development can be 'soul-crushing,' says Warren Spector

Deus Ex, Epic Mickey designer said work on large sets of budget is "a lot less fun than playing games should be."

The process of making big budget, AAA games can be a difficult task that breaks the mood of a person. It is based on Deus Ex and Epic Mickey designer Warren Spector, who told Games Industry International that the development of these projects comes with many loads.

"As cool as AAA games are the time and money that goes into their business is simply the soul crushing, at least for me," said Spector. "There are many voices to be heard, as legitimate stakeholders, it's just a lot less fun to play games should be."
  • Spector was recently released work, after closing Disney Junction Point Studios in late January. The industry veteran does not know what he intends to do.
  • According to Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios creative director Stefan Ljungqvist, big budget games are here to stay, but can decrease in number.
"I do not think the big budget games will disappear," Ljungqvist said this week. "It will be less of them. But it is a good thing, because maybe we do not need 40 FPS. I do not want to play all [laughs], but maybe we need one, two or three. "
