Review: FEZ screenshot

FEZ

is an independent platform game with a retro look and a basic premise that is as unique as it is simple. Sounds familiar? These games are a dime a dozen these days, with new ones that appear every week, but again when FEZ

was revealed for the first time, that really stands out among the crowd.

Polytron announced as July 17, 2007, and quickly became the darling of the indie that everyone was excited. The years, however, were puzzling platform game fish Phil lost in a sea of ??mind games, like, and what was the game in locations around the world now looks like any other fish in the pond.

on your hands, however, and you will see that

FEZ

is more than capable of finding the spotlight.

FEZ (Xbox Live Arcade) Developer: Polytron Author: Polytron Released: April 13, 2012 MSRP: 800 Microsoft Points FEZ Gomez tells the story of an adorable, vaguely bipedal, wad a white substance that lives in a two dimensional world. Although the inhabitants of this world are decidedly pro-cubic 2D and hatred (as there), Gomez discovers that he is different from the others, came into possession of a fez magic allows you to do the impossible - 2D to convert a world one of the three dimensions. The world is divided into a series of steps, connected by a series of gates and doors to create a chain expansion, the site plan. The steps are presented in a two-dimensional perspective, but each is actually a fully 3D environment. Gomez with fez, the levels can be rotated from left to right, showing all four sides of each level. However, Gomez himself is still a 2D sprite, and this is where FEZ the trick.

Once the level is increased, the surface of the screen "flattened" to form a two dimensional image. Gomez himself remains a single sprite, and can not interact with the world as a major traditional platforms. To conquer the world, players must constantly rotate the scene to change shape and innovate.

Since everything flattens out, which could be an unbridgeable gulf earlier in perspective may be a short hop to the next. To give a simple example of what can be done, there is a wall with two layers of vines, that Gomez can use to climb. However, patches of vines spread half of the wall with a patch on the left side of the wall and one on the right, too far to jump through Gomez. Fortunately, the patch starting higher than the lower extremities, so that if the level is turned to a perspective on the sides, the vines are attached to perfection. The two separate parcels of vines are now large, and can rise Gomez.

It's just a simple example, but the game is played with the key trick in many ways unique and intelligent. Using the perspective of changes similar to those Paper Mario

and married to illusions of Escher-style online

FEZ

will keep you thinking all the time. Most puzzles are very simple, but the challenge is to make the work of brain itself the right path. It can be surprisingly difficult to think in three dimensions while playing in two, and

AA> cunning exploits it perfectly to create a game that will not grow to the point of frustration but it provides enough challenge to give the head of a consistent training.

As a platform game puzzle

FEZ

not just go through the steps and the conquerors of monsters. There is no real enemies in the game, and if Gomez falls off a cliff or is involved in the patches of "negative space", he simply reappear in the last stable platform, stood on . Instead of survival, the objective is to collect gold cubes thirty-two, many of which are earned by collecting small "bits" that will become a new platform, when eight of them meet . In what looks like a flash

Mario , new doors open, and Gomez raised more buckets, allowing players to explore vast areas card.

If thirty two buckets sound like much, you'll be happy to know that their collection is not as bad as it sounds. The map screen shows exactly what can kindly be collected on each card, and lets you know if the bits are present. Each time you collect all the bits (or sometimes even buckets) at a stage before moving on, the obligation to go back is minimized. Of course, the world itself is vast, with multiple doors on the steps leading to all sorts of different ways, making it surprisingly easy to feel lost and overwhelmed -. Although not necessarily in the wrong direction

collected enough cubes to win the game is easier than it looks, and the cleanliness of the game must have for first time players a handful of hours. However,

FEZ

Photo packs a lot of extras to keep the investment some players with a series of intricate puzzles that remain optional, even the smartest tax minds. The rooms are indicated with a "?" symbol on the map are at home enigmas secrets that give the player with additional rewards, most often a "negative" of the cube. There are thirty-two cubes negative, corresponding to gold 32. The good news is that these count towards the 32 needed to end the game, so players can win the game faster if they buy it. The "bad" news is that Photo Photo FEZ Photo Photo throws down the gauntlet to anyone trying to bring everyone together.
