Media Molecule co-founder talks LBP2 changes, Move support

05/11/2010 Media Molecule co-founder talks LBP2 changes, Move Support
In a recent interview with VG247, Media Molecule co-founder Mark Healy talked about some of the big changes coming to LittleBigPlanet 2 -- not all of them were revealed in this morning's action-packed, Passion Pit-infused trailer. According to Healy, improving the "Play, Create, Share" pillars of the first game was a focus for the sequel. The first two will be bolstered by new creation tools like the Direct Control Seat and character AI, which allow you to modify the genre of your homespun creations.

The Share pillar will see the implementation of the web functionality teased last year, suited to creating personalized websites for each of your in-game creations and making them easier to share with other players. Media Molecule will also streamline the stage-finding process with Level Links -- badges you can embed within your levels, which players can use to hop directly into another of your creations, or the next sequential level in your fully-formed game.

Once again, we "not sure what we can expect the Move 's almost limitless possibilities for Sackboy-griefing.

Kinect library for Xbox 360 revealed by USA Today

06/14/2010 Kinect library for Xbox 360 revealed by USA Today
Update: Oops! It looks like USA Today jumped the gun on the announcement and has since pulled the pieceits site. Stay tuned for the official Microsoft 'opening later.

USA Today has spilled the proverbial beans on Microsoft's Natal project -- not only has the paper confirmed the Kinect product name, but they've posted a few of the games in the pipeline for the system. Here we go:
  • Kinectimals features over 20 different virtual pets, including lions, tigers, and cheetahs, to play with or raise.
  • Joyride has returned to life as a controller-free racing game, apparently.
  • Kinect Sportswill offer sports: "boxing, bowling, beach volleyball, athletics, football and table tennis." For each of them, you will make proposals to play games.
  • Kinect Adventures has a river raft and obstacle course to navigate -- this is likely the demo we saw last week.
  • MTV Games will release a Dance CentralWhere you can cut a virtual rug.
  • And there will be more games announced later featuring both Disney characters and Star Wars characters, in conjunction with Disney and LucasArts, respectively.
Marc Whitten even namedrops Nintendo in USA Today's piece, but he says that without a controller, Kinect will be "fundamentally different." We'll keep our eyes open for these games all this week, so stay tuned.

Thanks, Jake!

[[[Dog Tricks: Fun and Games for Your Clever Canine]]]

Dog TricksThis entertaining book that will show you how to teach tricks and sleight of tricks with minimal effort. Your dog will love the stimulation and attention, and you LL 'the envy of other owners.

More review coming soon.

This is the best dog tricks books there! For both beginners or advanced dog trainers in this book is simple and clear. It has great pictures, as well as many different tricks. Highly recommend!

The book is well written and received quickly. I was told by me trainer to teach a trick at least once a month to my young Manchester Terrier to keep his mind going on good things. I just don't like the idea of using a clicker to have him do his "tricks". what happens when you tell him to do something and don't have a clicker with you? Just saying "good boy" with gusto works as well and you always have your voice with you.

A very nice pictorial pointing out the steps and positions for the dog and handler as well as side bars that give common issues you will find when training for each exercise.

If you aren't a deep reader then this book is up your alley. If you are looking for training theory and behavior, pass this one up.

Review: Blacklight: Tango Down

07/11/2010 Review: Blacklight: Tango Down

Review: Blacklight: Tango Down screenshot

Blacklight: Tango Down

Unfortunately, Blacklight: Tango Down, they don't give awards out for having noble intentions. Read on for the review!

Blacklight: Tango Down (PC/PSN/XBLA [reviewed])
Developer: Zombie Studios
Publisher: Ignition Entertainment
Released: July 7, 2010 (XBLA), July 14, 2010 (PC), TBA (PSN)
MSRP: 1200 Microsoft Points

You know how good a player first-person shooters really rushed and poorly designed multiplayer modes in shoehorned, just to fill some imaginary quota, which determines all games should have multiplayer, even if it 's bad? Welcome to the world Blacklight , a game based entirely on that premise. With no tangible story, no explanation for anything, and no semblance of coherence, Tango Down is the bad multiplayer aspect of a good single player game, only without the single player part.

There is a mode possibly resembling a campaign, but to call it that is being generous. Designed for four-player co-op and not balanced for solo players in the least, the "Black Ops" portion of the game involves players taking on the AI in glorified multiplayer matches. With no adequate checkpoints, enemies that ambush you, and the player character's ability to take only a handful of bullets before dying, it's not long before one realizes that this "campaign" is nothing more than a collection of time wasting exercises.

The Black Ops levels seem thrown in for no good reason and I gave up on them since co-op only works with invited friends and I don't know people stupid enough to be playing Blacklight without a good excuse. Frankly, these levels are just for show anyway, since multiplayer is where it's at.

Unfortunately, multiplayer is only marginally better. With characters that feel like they're gliding instead of walking along the floor, a health bar that appears to be there just for show, and a set of maps seemingly designed entirely around the idea of spawn camping, Blacklight: Tango Downit's damn miserable for decent work in the Internet.

Imagine a parody of Call of Duty, where spawn camping isn't just the best way to win, it's the only path to victory. Games, where the victory of good fortune, and not art, because the players are dead after the absorption of about 3 bullets and did not really fight each other, because all the 's apparently made of paper. Blacklight takes these frustrating problems to amazing new extremes, almost managing to impress in how terrible it's made them. Players have 175 hit points and I literally don't know why they're there, because the health bar has no use. If you're seen by an enemy, you're dead. You have no option to escape, because the time between getting spotted and hitting the ground is less than a second. You could argue that it's "realistic" but I argue that it's "shit."

It doesn't help that the maps are absolutely dreadful, mostly designed to reward spawn campers and snipers and screw over anybody else. It's not uncommon for one lucky team to "lay siege" to another team's spawn area, sniping or ambushing any player unfortunate enough to leave the safe zone, which isn't even all that safe since players can lob grenades over the wall or snipe from higher ground.

To his credit, Blacklight features a robust customization feature which is expanded as players rank up throughout their multiplayer careers. Armor, equipment, and various weapons can all be customized. There are also some unique little toys, like the Digigrenade which causes a huge ball of pixelation to appear and disorient enemies. Unfortunately, however, the different weapons on display are all moot due to the aforementioned wafer-thin flesh of the brittle player characters. It doesn't matter how powerful your weapon is when enemies die in one second flat with even the weakest guns.

Presentation is pretty damn awful as well, with really cluttered, unhelpful menus that don't really inform the player on anything. In the customization screens, there is no indication of where to go to find any of the new unlocks, and the weapon selection menus are messy and confusing. During the game, information appears in little black boxes that contain thin, grey, totally illegible text, so even when you do rank up and unlock something, you'll have no idea what you won.

If there's one way in which Blacklight impresses, it's with its graphics. For an XBLA title, one has to admit that Tango Downlooks very nice, with visual effects that almost look convincing in retail. Of course, retail games do better than this game, so that the graphics are really worth Aren t 'buying the game.

The easily pleased or easily fooled might convince themselves thatBlacklight: Tango Down is a great game, thanks to the smoke and mirrors created by developers. In the end, a full-fledged first-person shooter with impressive graphics on XBLA / PSN very prominent, and it is tempting to forgive the game 's problems due to the ambitions of the exhibition. Nevertheless, the ambition and the success of two completely different things, and Blacklight just isn't successful at anything, save for constant irritation. The game looks good and aims high, but the problem is it's just not fun. At all.

Score: 3.0 -- Poor (3s went wrong somewhere along the line. The original idea might have promise, but in practice the game has failed. Threatens to be interesting sometimes, but rarely.)

Power Gig signs Eric Clapton, padless drum controller

06/09/2010 Power Gig signs Eric Clapton, padless drum controller

Boston developer adds Dave Matthews Band and Kid Rock to the lineup of exclusive games for a fully functional guitar and innovative drum set.

With Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock and Rock Band 3 shipping to home consoles before 2010 expires, and Green Day: Rock Band shipping this week, the year already has a solid slate of rhythm games. But in Boston, there's a storm brewing. Seven45 Studios, a New England-based developer, revealed today that Eric Clapton, the Dave Matthews Band, and Kid Rock will be exclusive artists for the studio's upcoming Rise of the SixString. When the game ships this fall, it will include a wireless drum controller, alongside its fully functional six-string guitar.

It's like drumming, without the drums.

Each artist will lend "multiple tracks" to Power Gig, though only Eric Clapton's "Layla," the Derek and the Dominos version, has been confirmed as one of the game's 70-plus songs. The Dave Matthews Band is known for its improvisational style, while Kid Rock is an artist known for fusing multiple musical genres from rap to rock to country. Seven45 said the three acts will remain exclusive to the Power Gig franchise.

The second half of Seven45's announcement was the revelation of the game's drum kit. Dubbed the AirStrike, this ultraportable percussive plastic instrument differs from those already on the market, because it rests on the floor and is not propped up by anything. The drum pad has color-coded circles on its face that emit LED lights, which are in turn captured by the game's sticks. The sticks have accelerometers inside them that allow the game to know when the player is actively engaged in keeping the beat of a song. The AirStrike drum peripheral and the game's guitar will be compatible with all music games currently available.

For more on Power Gig, check out GameSpot's Power Gig: Rise of the SixString preview.
