GameSpot: How did the idea of Trine originally come about? Were you always hoping for a sequel?

Lauri Hyvarinen: The original Trine was initially a very small project by one of our programmers and a couple of trainees. Back in 2008, our then-big project got canned, and we decided to focus solely on Trine. That resulted in a lot of changes.

It wasn't an easy ride, and there were a lot of difficulties along the way, but at the end of the day we were quite happy with how Trine turned out. You could say that we were happy enough but not totally satisfied, so when we knew the game was good and would get some good sales too, we decided to start working on a sequel and put all of our new ideas and visions to use. This happened right around the time the original game was finished, in June 2009. It's been great, knowing that there's a lot of support out there and that a lot of people are waiting for Trine 2!

GS: What's the story behind Trine 2? Could you tell us about the characters? Has the gameplay changed much?

LH: Trine 2 brings back the familiar trio--the wizard, the thief, and the knight--in a new quest to restore the balance of the world. This time the heroes are thrust into the kingdom's old territory, where a new threat has emerged. The story goes a lot deeper than it did with the original Trine; we're really focusing on telling a great fantasy tale with Trine 2.

On the gameplay side, there are a lot of improvements: the heroes get new abilities, there's a lot more enemy variety and all-new unique puzzles, plus many more additions big and small. Last but not least, we have rewritten our whole gameplay engine, which means that cooperative multiplayer is available both off- and online, so players all over the world can now join up and play with their friends no matter if they're in the same room or 10,000 miles away.

GS: The striking visuals and soothing music are what stood out in the first game. Can we expect the same in the second?

LH: We've got our aim much higher this time around. Trine is a beautiful game, but Trine 2 takes things up a notch. We have rewritten our engine, added better shadows and lighting, written all-new shaders, redone all the particle effects, and in general we are using totally new art models, textures, and animations. We've also paid more attention to the levels and the environment to make the world feel more alive.

In short, Trine 2 is going to be one of the most beautiful games out there!

Everything sure is pretty in Trine.

GS: What things did you learn from developing the first game that you will apply toward the sequel?

LH: There are a lot of tiny lessons learned, simple stuff that is easy to overlook during development. Things like not introducing the player to water elements with a huge chasm that looks like a death trap if you jump into it, like in the fifth level of Trine, Crystal Caverns.

This is the biggest on the lessons relate to the business and manufacturing. Trine was very hard to get the project to completion. Of course, we want to Trine 2 is not only a better game, but also a better project. Early signs are good, for example, signing Trine 2, Atlus was a marriage made in heaven game, and we re "is already reaping the fruits!

GS: Could you describe what is still the same in Trine 2 and which features have changed?

LH: The basic idea of three characters solving puzzles with each character's unique abilities remains the same--yet of course online and offline co-op spices things up a bit, and we're making the game even more enjoyable as a co-op experience, with more focus on character balance. We have added some cool new abilities to make each character have even better puzzle-solving and fighting skills and in general to make the characters more balanced. Some of the puzzles are now way bigger and more complex, but at the same time there's a wide variety of solutions to each puzzle, and each character and character combination has their own solutions they can use, so no one should get stuck or feel useless. When you're playing Trine 2 in co-op, you're going to have a lot of fun no matter which character you're controlling.

We have also done some tweaking to the RPG-ish elements of Trine 2, mainly the character upgrades. We have always wanted upgrades to really mean something in the game--for example, add a new element to the game--and we're sticking to it. The new upgrade system will feel familiar, but it's much more usable and enjoyable.

There's also a wide range of improvements on the technical side, thanks to the rewriting of the whole engine, and this has allowed us to do some changes on the gameplay side, too. For example, players can now save their game at any time in a level, and the game will continue from that very spot. In addition to all the visual improvements, the game should also run at a much smoother frame rate.

It 's better to just sit back and enjoy the sight.

GS: What can we expect in terms of the music in the sequel?

LH: Music plays an important part in Trine 2, just like it did in the original game. Trine 2 is going to sound familiar but better. At the end of the day, nothing we can say will accurately describe the music of Trine 2; it's meant to be heard, so check out the trailers and other videos. We'll be announcing more details on the music of Trine 2 in the coming months, so stay tuned!

GS:Cooperative game is always welcome. You have made any changes to it?

LH: Trine 2 is built with three characters and their abilities in mind, whether it's single-player or co-op, offline or online. Trine 2 has a full online co-op mode, and this will be the major difference for most gamers, but we have also paid a lot of attention to make sure that the actual experience is as smooth and fun as it can be. In co-op, players can approach many of the puzzles in a different way, and this provides a lot of fun and replayability for the game. There's also a bunch of tricks that are really hard or impossible to pull off in single-player, but in co-op they become more accessible.

GS: Do players need to have played the first in order to enjoy the sequel?

LH: We'd recommend everyone to play Trine, because it's a great game and we're proud of it, but Trine 2 is a completely new adventure and a great experience even if you haven't played the original. Fans of the original will be right at home with the characters, but the game as a whole is very accessible to new players as well.

GS: Thank you for your time!

Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days Updated Impressions

06/23/2010 Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days Updated Impressions

We got to see single-player and multiplayer Kane & Lynch 2 in action at E3 2010.

Kane & Lynch 2 is hoping to build on the foundations of its predecessor with a more bombastic single-player mode and a more robust multiplayer feature set. We got to see both aspects of the game when we visited Square Enix's E3 2010 booth, where representatives from developer Io Interactive were also on hand to answer our questions.

The multiplayer Fragile Alliance mode will build on the same heist gameplay from the last game, where you have to either make it out of a robbery alive or turn on your teammates to take their loot. Undercover Cop is described by Io Interactive as "Fragile Alliance with extra paranoia." One of the criminal gang members will play as an undercover officer, who can easily be identified by the cop team, but whose job it is to take the criminals out one by one. Finally, Cops vs. Robbers is a straight team-based shootout for up to 12 players.

There will also be an arcade variation of Fragile Alliance that is played offline, making it good for practicing or for those without access to the Internet. The idea of the Arcade mode is that you get three lives, and the game keeps ramping up the difficulty until you use up all of them. There will also be different types of allied AI to keep you on your toes--some will be more likely to screw you over, while others may help you make it to the getaway vehicle.

Fragile Alliance will feature a total of six maps, all "built from the ground up" according to the developer. The maps will feature scenarios based on real-life events, such as the gang that hid diamonds in fish--a true crime episode that supposedly happened in the Far East. When looting, you need to be next to the goal to steal it, and friendly fire is off until the looting begins. While we didn't get to play this mode, it looked like a lot of fun and offered quite a challenge even for Kim Krogh, the game's multiplayer director.

The E3 build was also being used to show off a new section of the single-player game, which saw the criminal duo aboard a helicopter. The two hijacked the vehicle and then circled a skyscraper, taking out enemies using machine guns. You'll be able to use the helicopter side door as cover, and you can shoot out the windows of the building to reveal the enemies inside. After a while, another helicopter pulled alongside Kane & Lynch and began attacking, at which point our demo ended. We were told that this section takes place quite a ways into the main game, around 75 percent through the campaign.

Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days will be released on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on August 24 in the U.S., and 27 August in the UK. Stay with us for the game as we get it.

GoldenEye 007 targeting DS

07/30/2010 GoldenEye 007 targeting DS

Activision confirms classic N64 shooter headed to Nintendo's handheld alongside Wii version this November, courtesy of n-Space.

At this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, Nintendo put to bed speculation on whether it would be reviving GoldenEye 007, announcing that a reimaginging of Rare's Nintendo 64 classic would arrive for the Wiiin November this year. Nevertheless, won Activision 't limit the game with simply Nintendo' the console.

Daniel Craig's mug is just one example of the newly updated visuals.

As part of the report dismal profits this morning, Nintendo revealed that GoldenEye 007 is also in development for its 132 million-unit-selling handheld, the DS. Activision subsequently confirmed the listing for GameSpot, noting that n-Space (Call of Duty: Black Ops) is prepping the title for launch alongside the Eurocom-developed Wii version in November.

Details of what you can expect from the handheld version remains a mystery. Wii version is a fairly direct translation appreciated 1997 shooter, though it will also feature updated visuals, four-player split-screen multiplayer, and new game modes. GoldenEye 007 for the Wii will also include online multiplayer, a functionality its N64 cousin could not offer.

For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage of the Wii version of GoldenEye 007.

Baby Shower Games: Fun Party Games and Helpful Tips for the Hostess

[[[Baby Shower Games: Fun Party Games and Helpful Tips for the Hostess]]]

Discription : This versatile party-pad is a must-have for the baby shower hostess. With enough sheets for a party of 15, this collection of eight classic and updated shower games are sure to delight a wide variety of guests and help everyone celebrate the mother-to-be and her coming bundle of joy.

More review soon.

I was looking for good ideas, baby shower game for a low price. This spiral bound books includes the play-lists for the 14 people who can be easily removed for use. There are also instructions and answers, where applicable, for the games. At the end of the book, there is a place for the magazine gifts received in the shower. This overall good value and worth the money.

There are so many cheesy baby shower games out there that a lot of people do not enjoy playing. This book made it easy and fun with no work need from me since it provided the game sheets. So many enjoyed the games that I had requests for the name of the book so they could buy it too for any baby showers they would host in the future.

I am planning a baby shower for my daughter (the first time I have organized a baby shower). I have done numerous searches online for baby shower games and party ideas etc. and have found plenty of free information detailing games and ideas. I did not want to spend a lot of time constructing and printing up games however and this book is absolutely wonderful in that respect. The book comes with eight shower games and includes 15 copies of each game. The pages (a golden color with cute graphics) are perforated at the top (top spiral bound book) and tear out for immediate use. The book has only 3 brief pages in the beginning that outline the book, the games in the book and suggested prizes for the baby shower games, so if you are looking for a detailed baby shower book then this is not the one for you. If you are looking for a quick short cut to some cute games, then this is the way to go.

Hands-on: DC Universe Online

06/03/2010 Practical: DC Universe Online
MMOs are at their best when you're gallantly fighting alongside compatriots, using abilities with a group of friends (or strangers) to topple bad guys and win epic loot. But let's face it -- even in a massively multiplayer online game, you can't always have a full party of helpful members with which to face your challenges. Sometimes you're up late, playing by yourself, and you've got to grind it out alone.

And that's where the road meets the rubber in an MMO: Is the game fun even without the multiplayer element? I got a chance to see Sony Online Entertainment's DC Universe Online in action at a pre-E3 event a few weeks ago, and played a combat-based level by myself. And while I did get to see some new features of the game by browsing through the menus and beating up Harley Quinn\\ 'S henchmen with my Batman so I' m unfortunately, that DCUO's combat isn't quite as enthralling as it could be.
